High Efficacy of Combined Albendazole and Ivermectin Treatment Against Gastrointestinal Nematodes in Vervet Monkeys and Baboons

چکیده
Non-human primates (NHPs) are important pre-clinical animal models in biomedical research, mainly through vaccine and drug development for diseases such as schistosomiasis, trypanosomiasis, leishmaniasis, malaria and HIV/AIDS, amongst others (Farah et al., 2005). These NHPs harbour a variety of gastrointestinal parasites which can cause blood loss, tissue damage, spontaneous abortion, congenital malformations and death (Gillespie, 2006). Apart from causing clinical disease the nematodes may confound research data and thus it is important that experimental animals be parasites free. Most of the nematodes such as Trichuris trichura are also potentially zoonotic. Previous studies conducted at the Institute of Primate Research (IPR) have recorded a high prevalence of important gastrointestinal helminthes (in up to 65%) and protozoa (up to 30%) in animals in captivity (Muriuki et al., 1998). The main helminth parasites comprise Strongyloides Scand. J. Lab. Anim. Sci. 2010 Vol. 37 No. 4

Field Evaluation of Anthelmintic Efficacy of Levamisole, Albendazole, Ivermectin and Morantel Tartrate against Gastrointestinal Nematodes of Sheep
Anthelmintic efficacy of levamisole, albendazole, ivermectin and morantel tartrate was evaluated in 75 sheep naturally parasitized with Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, Oesophagostomum and Ostertagia spp. Results revealed that levamisole, albendazole, ivermectin and morantel tartrate were lOO, 98.82, 97.02 and 76.50 per cent effective, respectively in reducing the eggs per gram of faeces. The anim...
متن کاملField evaluation of the efficacy of common anthelmintics used in the control of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep in Dabat district, Northwest Ethiopia
BACKGROUND Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) infections are the main impediments that restrict the welfare and productivity of small ruminant in the world. Effective management of GINs in grazing sheep relies heavily on the use of highly efficacious anthelmintic drugs. However, anthelmintic resistance is becoming a significant concern in the world, and this phenomenon severely threatens the poten...
متن کاملAlimentary tract parasites of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops): A potential reservoir for human transmission
Monkeys are important experimental models for investigating human diseases. The aim of this study was to survey the alimentary tract parasites among imported vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) to Iran. Fecal samples were collected from 40 vervets imported from Tanzania to Razi Vaccine and Serum Research Institute of Iran. Fecal samples were assessed by direct smear and Telman sedimentation...
متن کاملFirst Report of Anthelmintic Resistance in Gastrointestinal Nematodes of Sheep from Costa Rica
As the prevalence and severity of anthelmintic resistance continue to rise, nematode infections in sheep correspondingly reduce the profitability of the sheep industry. In Costa Rica, sheep production systems are increasing in both number and importance. A field trial study was carried out to detect the level of anthelmintic resistance to albendazole and ivermectin in gastrointestinal nematodes...
متن کاملExperimental infections of baboons (Papio spp.) and vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) with Trichinella zimbabwensis and successful treatment with ivermectin.
Experimental Trichinella zimbabwensis infections were established in three baboons (Papio sp.) and four vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) and the clinical-pathological manifestations assessed. The infected animals showed clinical signs ranging from fever, diarrhoea, periorbital oedema and muscular pain in varying degrees. One baboon became blind due to the infection. Levels of creatinine ...
